Hugo {Six Months}
I am so far in arras with this series, that I almost thought of throwing up my hands and quitting. But I going ahead with it. Babyhood is such a fleeting time, and so full of wonder. It is worth documenting. Even from the distance of a few months.
:: Growing ::
Hugo’s six month birthday was fairly miserable. This milestone was smack-dab in the middle of a dramatic and frightening illness for which he spent five days in the Children’s Hospital. For that reason, we have a fairly accurate picture of exactly where he started this month. When properly hydrated, he was hovering around eight kilograms.
:: Learning ::
At six months, big changes were afoot! Hugo was learning to move a bit, taking advantage of the hardwood floors at my parents’ house to scoot around. Albeit backwards, mostly. He is also learning about gravity, unfortunately. A few tumbles from sitting position to supine have resulted in bumped heads and plenty of tears.
He is also learning how to sit in a high chair and join us for mealtimes. I’m enjoying this development, as it is infinitely easier to eat a meal without a baby in my lap.
:: Mastering ::
Rolling is now an officially “mastered” skill. While he has rolled in the past, it was never all that easy for him. Now, though he’s a pro!
:: Moving ::
At the beginning of the month, I thought for sure Hugo would begin scooting, just has his sister did before him. He was able to inch backwards when seated on a smooth floor. But it appears as though he’s content to remain fairly stationary, sitting upright surrounded by toys. Sometime mid-month, however, he did figure out how to roll, both front- and back-ways. I showed him a couple of times how it goes, and it was like something clicked, and off he went, practicing his rolls. He was pretty excited to finally get it.
:: Eating ::
We started solids this month! We took things pretty slowly, not wanting to push the digestive system after Hugo’s illness. I offered a few purees, but he didn’t show much interest. It was not until that he got his hands on some avocado that he seemed to actually enjoy eating. With Stella, I tried Baby Lead Weaning without much success, so I was reluctant to try it again with Hugo, especially since he had just been sick. But he did not like purees at all, and we were traveling which makes feeding baby a bit more complicated, so I went ahead and offered him real food. It was a hit! He is especially fond of cucumbers, bread, pizza curst, and french fries (we found out quite by accident when grabby hands proved too quick for mama.)
:: Sleeping ::
Hugo’s sleep has gone all to hell. This seems to be a side effect of staying in the hospital where co-sleeping was disallowed. He’s back to full-time co-sleeping and multiple night-wakings. Although that he continues to fall asleep easily is a blessing that I won’t overlook. Since we spent this month traveling, he has not been on much of a schedule, napping when tired, usually three times a day. He was going to bed around seven or eight PM, and sleeping about twelve (frequently interrupted) hours at night time. Keeping track of night wakings throws me into the pits of despair, so I’m not too sure exactly how frequently he was waking up, but it must have been ever couple of hours. At least.
:: Changing ::
His hair is getting more and more fare. I love it, not least because it has proven my baby premonition right! I dreamt of a fair-haired baby boy when about seven weeks pregnant with Hugo, so.
:: Enjoying ::
Traveling with this baby is proving to be a real treat. Although his sleep is rather disturbed, he is pretty flexible and not too badly impacted by jet lag. He naps easily, anywhere and everywhere, and is happy to stroll around in his pram or be carried in the Ergo. As long as Mama is near by, he’s a happy boy!
Oh yeah, and also...
I drew inspiration for this series from Jordan at Berlin by the Bay.
