I really want to write a Travelogue about Bali.
I love to write travelogues, and would be thrilled to see this little website of mine become a bit of a resource for people traveling with young ones. Buuuuuut, unless you want a post with tips and tricks for the many ways in which you stay at a gigantic resort in Nusa Dua and never leave the pool, I don’t think I would be much of a resource to anyone, really.
As per usual, on our recent trip to Bali we spent the majority of our time bobbing around the pool, eating our meals at the hotel, and generally being the worst possible types of tourists. And sorry. But I loved every second of my lame, semi-ethical, industrial tourism complex holiday. Like even the seconds when I was awake before the sun, sitting on the beach with my baby, and thinking, yes, this is EXACTLY why resorts exist and, I am the luckiest, most grateful sonofabitch and this is 100 percent amazing.
I did leave my kids with our babysitter a few times (maybe THAT’S why I had such a good time?) to go scuba diving right off the cost near Sanur. I saw a lion fish! I also went surfing (and sunburnt myself to high heaven), and took a couple of trips into Seminyak. I can recommend a couple things there, so let’s just do that? (Also I did next to no research for this trip so this is in no way an extensive list of things to do in Seminyak, just a few things that I stumbled across.)
I spent quite some time wandering up and down Jl. Kayu Aya, and the surrounding streets. This seems to be where things are happening, where most of the interesting shops are, and I think it's probably a good place to start and get your bearings in Seminyak.
:: Mr. Zimi ::
I picked up a couple of dresses at Mr. Zimi, who make the perfect beach town apparel and I’m basically going to wear their garments exclusively from now on. They cary little girls dresses as well with just the right amount of spin and twirl. Stella wore her new frock three days in a row. You can find last season’s dresses discounted at Mr. Zimi Dua which is right around the corner from the main shop.
:: Bali Boat Shed ::
A lovely little treasure trove of beachy outfits for men and women. They have their own line of basic tees which I really loved and I am especially partial to their pink flamingo print hawaiian shirt for men. High fives, Shed team.
:: The Coffee Library ::
A cute little cafe right on Jl Kayu Aya, the Coffee Library is a great spot where you can get a hit of air con, and an excellent cold drip coffee while watching yogis stroll home after class.
:: The Earth Cafe ::
I powered up with some green juice here, and it was pretty delish! I also I picked up a bunch of raw-food dairy-free hippie nonsense. You can also buy organic produce, essential oils, various other magical essentials of the privileged Bali hippie lifestyle. My kids went nuts for a goji berry bar. From what I gather their stuff is made locally.
So, maybe there IS a reason to pry yourself away from the hotel pool after all? Bali is really such a wonderful place, with so much to explore, so maybe nex time we'll get out a bit more? I'm not sure. But here are a few more photos.
